Program Requirements:

The University of Louisville placed a strong emphasis on the planetarium providing educational programming designed to supplement classroom work at the university, secondary, elementary and kindergarten levels. Though built on the university's Belknap Campus, it was important to reach out to younger students to encourage their fascination with the study of the Universe. The new design would ensure accessibility to schools in Louisville, Kentucky, as well as life long learners throughout the region.

Additionally, the design needed to accommodate a separate traditional classroom space and gift shop/retail facilities to further augment the building's use.

Design Solutions:

It was important to equip the new planetarium with the best equipment possible. The laser and three dimensional projection systems will allow the auditorium to be used for advanced chemistry, physics, medical and music classes as well. In addition to serving as a planetarium, the design includes a mini-museum, offering changing displays throughout the year, oriented to grades K-8. In order to provide a proper learning environment the auditorium is designed with site-lines that allow it to double as a lecture hall/classroom. The design includes an exterior courtyard that contains interactive exhibits such as a solar telescope, and provides a place for stargazing that further expands the learning possibilities.
