The
Ekstrom Library is a 230,000 square-foot, five-level structure located
in the central quadrangle of Belknap Campus. The proximity and character
of the adjacent buildings, plus the park-like setting, were all significant
factors in determining the librarys design and form.
The exterior
of the building is brick and exposed concrete, and the cantilevered
overhangs provide overhead protection at the entrance as well as
shade to the glass areas. By utilizing a glazing system capable
of reducing solar heat gain and conduction, larger amounts of glass
could be used to take advantage of the tree filled view while maintaining
the open appearance of the buildings lower floors
