The goal of this
project was to develop new housing units at affordable market rates,
which appeal to many first-time homebuyers with incomes insufficient
to purchase more expensive existing units throughout the city. Of
particular importance was a requirement mandated all units be flats,
so as to harmonize with the two-story neighborhood. The resulting
design offered twelve first floor flats to accommodate the physically
handicapped and twelve second floor flats that are open to the low-income
general public. |

Highlands
Village is a twenty-four unit affordable housing development located
in the heart of the historically significant community known as the
lower Highlands. With this project, it was important to reinforce
the existing housing stock with architecturally appropriate units.
Similar to its neighbors in terms of massing, scale and density, the
Highlands Village development completes the corner where Rubel Avenue
meets Breckenridge Street. Since the project's inception, the initially
apprehensive neighborhood now hails Highlands Village as a positive
addition to the community, and its success has spurred further neighborhood
revitalization adjacent to the site. |
