The Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary was interested in providing visitors with overnight
accommodations on their campus. They wanted to provide an on-campus
Marriott Courtyard-like facility to support the new Conference Center
that Louis & Henry had just finished designing and constructing
for the Seminary. It was important to respect the architectural heritage
of the campus and present a friendly and inviting feeling to the adjacent
neighborhood.
Design
Solutions:
Two
existing dorms, Rice Hall and Judson Hall, located across from the
Conference Center were connected with a new three-story linking facility.
The new building serves as the center of the complex and was designed
in such a way to ensure that it was not overly dominant. The design
aesthetics closely emulate the existing architectural style of the
renovated Rice and Judson Halls. Housing accommodations in Rice and
Judson Halls are arranged along a single-loaded corridor allowing
rooms to be oriented to the east for morning sun. The main circulation
and corridor access is on the west side towards the vehicular traffic,
thus being respectful to the adjacent neighborhood on the opposite
side of the project site. The new building not only connects the housing,
but also provides support for the Conference Center, including management
offices, six meeting rooms utilizing state-of-the-art technology in
video conferencing, campus wide broadcasting, and video projection.
