The Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary needed to create an on-campus residence facility
that would appeal to students that currently live off campus in market
rate apartment complexes. Unlike traditional dormitories, the apartments
needed to include large bedrooms and closets, as well as, kitchen,
dining, and living areas. |

The
site for the apartment complex is located on Grinstead Drive. Careful
consideration was taken to ensure that the design of the new apartments
would be contextually sensitive with the houses neighboring the site.
Vernacular forms and materials of the surrounding neighborhood are
implied throughout the construction of this aesthetically responsive
and appealing design, blending with the Crescent Hill archetype. The
resulting solution is a synthesis of several richly colored brick
types offsetting fields of stucco and wood accents in a two-story
structure with alternating gable roofs. The building complex consists
of five smaller structures rather than one large building in order
to foster a community environment and not the traditional institutional
dormitory feeling. The design evolved into spacious floor plans with
large window openings, elliptical convex balconies, each with access
to the local streetscape. This building complex provides a unique
pedestrian access experience to the Seminary's student life exercise,
gymnasium, and pool facilities as well as their highly acclaimed dining
facilities and coffee shop. |
