Okolona Post Office
Program Requirements:

A formulized, basically standard floor plan were project mandates from the United States Postal Service.
Design Solutions:

The site was a suburban location across from a major shopping center within a context that could be "Anytown, USA" exhibiting no particularly strong local vernacular. Therefore, the building’s design springs from images of the Postal Service in general, and other similar civic buildings, more than the surrounding context.

The exterior of the building was designed to emphasize the public areas and to evoke images of classically designed Post Offices built throughout the country over decades of time. Details of the Main Louisville, Kentucky Post Office were studied and carefully manipulated to evoke similar feelings and responses. Blue, a dominant postal service color, was used extensively as a not so gentle reminder of the owner. In similar fashion, tile accents in a pattern evocative of a sheet of stamps are used with intricately detailed brick masonry.

Technical Details:

Glazed entrances capped with pyramidal roofs and glass gables highlight the long facade and clearly delineate the building’s circulation patterns. Public and private areas are clearly denoted through changes of material, natural and artificial lighting, and security walls when needed.

The project was selected by the US Postal Service as one to emulate in a detailed study of their other similar facilities, wherein they looked at overall function, image, initial and long term cost
