Lyndon Fire Station
Program Requirements:

The City of Lyndon wished to expand Fire Station No. 1 by approximately 15,000-square-feet so that a two truck bay could be added as well as offices, classrooms, and community meeting space. Other requirements of this project included a heliport on the roof and amenities to enhance the quality of life for volunteer firefighters.
Design Solutions:

The design met specific functional needs such as harmonizing with the residential character of the area and being a good neighbor to other community commercial developments. Located at the corner of Lyndon Lane and New LaGrange Road, Fire Station No. 1 is a prominent landmark at the center of Lyndon, Kentucky.

The desire to maintain a large setback from nearby residential areas and providing drive through truck bays limited the buildable area of the site and required a two-story plan with a small basement excavated into underlying rock. Large, expandable classrooms span the rear entrance to the truck bays. Offices and support facilities are grouped on either side of these bays. Columns, arched windows, and brick details that offer a contemporary interpretation of classic American form in civic architecture moderate the scale of the building.

Technical Details:

The building is constructed by using concrete masonry bearing walls with brick veneer, steel bar joist floors, and roof structure. A rooftop heliport accessible from a hospital type elevator has been provided for emergency police and medical use in an area where open space for landing is rapidly decreasing.
