Freedom Hall
Program Requirements:

The purpose of this renovation project was to increase the seating capacity of Freedom Hall from 16,500 to 19,500 for major events such as University of Louisville basketball games, and to significantly enhance the facility for exhibitions and conventions. The renovation also included the creation of luxury boxes for corporate donors. The entire renovation had to be completed in five months, in the period between the end of the basketball season and the beginning of the State Fair.
Design Solutions:

The program requirements were accomplished by lowering the main arena floor 10 feet and adding new retractable and trail-er-mounted seats. A new highly sound-absorbent ceiling, computerized lighting system, concert-quality sound system and extensive acoustic treatment, and a new scoreboard were included in the arena renovation.

The project also included upgrading locker rooms and dressing facilities, and constructing new and expanded space for the University’s various support programs including 15 glass-enclosed private boxes. Additional space renovation included new public restroom and concession areas, VIP lounge and show manager’s suites for exhibition and convention activities, and modernization of the first and second level concourses to enhance exhibition utilization.
